Reporting to the Facilities & Parks Coordinator, the Custodian is responsible for the maintenance, care, security, cleanliness and general custodial duties of municipal buildings.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:
The foregoing description reflects the general duties necessary to describe the principal functions of the job identified and shall not be construed to be all the work requirements that may be inherent in this classification.

  • Perform all janitorial functions;
  • Maintain general security;
  • Basic maintenance repairs;
  • Performs housekeeping duties by maintaining clean areas;
  • Responsible for giving assistance to all users at municipal facilities. Ensuring assistance to community volunteers to maintain the aesthetic qualities of facilities;
  • Making daily regular checks of facility;
  • Reporting damage or vandalism to Facilities & Parks Coordinator;
  • Responsible for performing maintenance/cleaning;
  • Assist in any other maintenance duties deemed necessary by the Facilities & Parks Coordinator;
  • Responsible for set up and tear down of facilities according to booking schedules;
  • Protect own health and the health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety;
  • Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • Keep running inventory of all cleaning chemicals and supplies;
  • Security and opening of buildings when required;
  • Keeping all exits clear at all times to ensure safety;
  • Assist Facility Operators in Pool Filter Room when required; and
  • Carry out other related duties assigned by the Facilities & Parks Coordinator.

Statement of Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification/Licenses:

  • Minimum completion of Grade 12 and/or equivalent.
  • First Aid and CPR-AED Certification preferred
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license

Experience:

  • Three months previous experience

Knowledge:

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Skills/Abilities

  •  Ability to obtain a clear Vulnerable Sector Check;
  • Proficiency in the use of tools and power cleaning equipment required to perform the duties of the position;
  • Must be physically fit and capable of performing physical labour at various job locations;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to follow instructions with a high sense of responsibility;
  • Willingness to participate in the continuous development of skills and knowledge as required for the position;
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with co-workers and the public.
