Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week
Whereas carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it is
a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas; and
Whereas CO is the leading cause of accident poisoning deaths in North America;
and
Whereas each year, it proves fatal for dozens of Canadians and makes thousands
more sick with what they think is the flu; and
Whereas increasing awareness of the importance of having functioning carbon
monoxide detectors can help save lives; and
Whereas starting on January 1st, 2026, CO alarms must be installed on every
storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas in homes that have any fuel-burning
appliance (like a furnace, water heater or stove that uses natural gas, propose, oil,
or wood), a fireplace, an attached garage, and/or air for heating that comes from a
fuel-burning appliance not contained within the home (e.g. an appliance in a utility
shed); and
Whereas this November, the Town of Arnprior’s Fire Prevention / Protection Office
will be increasing public awareness of carbon monoxide hazards at home, school
and work, highlighting the simple steps we can all take to avoid personal tragedy;
Therefore I, Lisa McGee, Mayor, do hereby proclaim November 1st to 7th, 2026 as
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week in the Town of Arnprior and urge all residents
and visitors to participate in the outreach activities planned by the Fire Prevention /
Protection Officers to highlight the simple steps that everyone can take to limit the
risks posed by carbon monoxide to themselves and their families.
