The Town of Arnprior has committed $275,000 to implement a new skate park in the vacant land adjacent to the Nick Smith Centre in 2026. The existing skate park, originally established in 2002 and updated in 2012 is at the end of its useful life. The existing park contains stand-alone metal ramps which, while practical at the time of original creation, are not as ideal for user experience as cast in place concrete features. As the sport has evolved, more companies have grown in Canada that specialize in creating optimal skateparks.
The Recreation and Parks Master Plan has identified that the current skatepark location is not ideal and the nearby vacant parkland adjacent to the entrance of the Nick Smith Centre would be an optimal location. In the below image, the proposed location is outlined in red and the current skate park location is outlined in blue for reference.

General consultation on recreation amenities was completed as part of the Recreation and Parks Master Plan. Consultation prior to tendering on this project specifically was done directly with the Arnprior Skateboard Association (ASA), a local non-profit dedicated to furthering the sport through youth education and coaching.
The ASA expressed interest in a park that was approximately 75% "street style" features with a focus on beginner and intermediate features. They will continue to be consulted as the design progresses and the Town appreciates the input from this dedicated community group.

Skateboarding is a sport with a relatively low cost of entry (skateboard and a helmet) which allows for broader participation. This type of amenity provides a place for kids to fit into a group in the context of a healthy outdoor physical activity without the rigidity of more traditional organized sports.
