he reconstruction in both arenas is now well underway!
Upon removing the concrete from Glenn Arthur Arena, it was great to see that minimal settling had occurred in the last 48 years. The existing clear stone subbase for the concrete slab, while fantastic for mitigating the effects of frost, did not compact to modern standards so a layer of gravel had to be brought in and compacted over top of the clear stone to ensure that the new concrete slab would meet expectations for durability. The apron (perimeter of the rink) is being prepared currently and concrete is expected to be poured on this portion next week. In the coming weeks, refrigeration piping, insulation and reinforcing steel will commence for the rink slab.
The roof trusses have all been scraped free of loose lead paint, pressure washed and painting of the trusses will be finished up on Bert Hall Arena this week. Though the truss work was a long process, it ensures that the structural steel is protected from further rust in the coming years. Starting next week, the concrete on Bert Hall Arena will start to be cut into a grid so that it can be removed in sections. Check out our quick video tour of the construction site below.
