On Saturday, May 2 at approximately 6:00 PM - the Arnprior Fire Department was required to respond for a report of an unauthorized outdoor fire in the Gillies Grove, an old-growth forest owned and protected by the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
An adult observed two children (estimated ages 11–13) tending to a small fire inside a wooden fort which was constructed. Upon discovery the youth fled the area and the adult resident promptly notified the fire department and attempted to extinguish the fire. Crews from the Arnprior Fire Department responded and ensured the fire was fully extinguished.
Residents are reminded that fires are strictly prohibited in this area. This type of activity presents a significant risk and could result in devastating consequences.
While we understand and appreciate that building forts and outdoor play are important parts of childhood, lighting fires—especially in prohibited areas and without responsible adult supervision—can have serious and far-reaching impacts.
We ask parents, guardians, and our local educators to share this message about fire safety to help us protect our community.
