Early Winter Ice Conditions in Arnprior

As temperatures begin to drop, the waterways around Arnprior are starting to freeze. The Town urges all residents to exercise extreme caution when outdoors near rivers, lakes, ponds, and marsh areas during this early freeze period.

Although ice may look solid, early-season ice is highly unpredictable and often too thin and unstable to support people, pets, or vehicles.

General Ice Safety Guidance

• NO ICE IS SAFE ICE
• Stay off newly formed or untested ice. Early winter ice varies greatly in thickness and strength from one spot to another.
• Keep pets away from frozen waterways. Leash pets to prevent them from running onto unsafe ice.
• Supervise children closely. Remind them not to play near or on ice.
• Avoid ice near moving water. The Madawaska and Ottawa Rivers, as well as areas near inlets, outlets, and bridges, freeze unevenly.

Emergency Preparedness

• Carry safety equipment such as ice picks, a whistle, and a flotation aid if traveling near frozen waterways is essential.
• If someone falls through the ice, call 911 immediately – never step onto unsafe ice.
