Reporting directly to the Manager of Culture/Curator, the Museum Collections Coordinator (MCC) is responsible for creating the conditions to safely facilitate and enrich public access to community belongings.
The primary responsibilities for this position include (but not limited to) the
following:
- Guide and support, through procedures and participation, public access to community belongings in storage, at the museum, in exhibits, programs, and events, in educational efforts, and in the community.
- Assist with ongoing documentation, cataloguing, and housing of the museum collection, including documenting incoming accessions and working with collections management database software such as Past Perfect and Argus.
- Help oversee, implement, and maintain a proper storage plan for all collections at the museum as well as at offsite storage locations, including monitoring environmental conditions and Integrated Pest Management Systems, employing preventive conservation techniques, and completing regular condition assessments of collections in storage and on exhibition.
- Assist the Manager of Culture/Curator with identifying objects in collection for conservation and assist with preparing objects or archival materials to be deaccessioned by the museum as stated in the museum’s Collections Policy.
- Welcome and support visitors and volunteers in accessing and caring for belongings while working in partnership to establish procedures of co-care and return belongings to neighbours, communities, and First Nations as requested and possible according to the museum’s Collections Policy.
- General assistance with museum operations which may include the opening and closing procedures for the building when onsite, conducting security checks for the building and belongings, responding to general public inquiries regarding the collection, posting artifacts on social media, assisting at the front desk, guiding visitors and volunteers, and other duties and/or special projects as assigned by the Manager of Culture/Curator.
The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following qualifications:
- Completion of High School
- Post-secondary diploma or degree from a recognized college or university, preferably in education, Museum Studies or History considered an asset.
- Valid class ‘G’ driver’s license for off-site work.
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required prior to hire.
- Knowledge of local Arnprior and area heritage and culture
- Demonstrated knowledge of conservation and storage techniques for artifacts.
- Experience working with / or conservation of artifacts.
- Knowledge of Canadian history.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people.
- Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects with competing demands.
