Reporting directly to the Manager of Culture/Curator, the Museum Programming and Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the development, promotion, and communication of museum activities, programs and events for local schools, children, and adults.
The primary responsibilities for this position include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Develop, coordinate, implement, and evaluate a full slate of educational programs which correspond directly with the Ontario school curriculum for children and youth from elementary school to high school and beyond.
- Create presentations, create and deliver handouts, deliver programs, coordinate and schedule class visits, research the needs of teachers relative to the curriculum, maintain records and statistics, maintain and handle artefacts in a safe and effective manner, and develop good relationships with school principals, teachers and home school groups.
- Build connections with area residents and organizations, create and develop engaging museum outreach programs, and deliver them off-site to seniors in residence and in long-term care and other community groups as needed according to the needs and interests of the audience.
- Create and implement a range of talks, tours, lectures, programs and special events for the public according to community and museum interests and needs while leveraging and contributing to community partnerships.
- Work with the Manager of Culture/Curator to develop and provide museum exhibition interpretation for the purposes of programming and museum tours, including an updated docent guide based on current and future exhibitions.
- The Coordinator will be an active and effective member of the Museum team, and is expected to provide input on museum activities, exhibits, policy and procedures as well as community engagement while fostering an environment for exceptional visitor services.
- Assist the Manager of Culture/Curator and Museum Administrative Assistant, the Coordinator with collaborate with and schedule volunteers for various jobs and events as required.
- Follow the opening and closing procedures for the building.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of:
- Completion of High School.
- Valid class ‘G’ driver’s license for off-site work.
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required prior to hire.
- Demonstrated experience and familiarity with the Ontario curriculum and working with schools.
- Knowledge of Canadian history.
- Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people, including students of various ages and abilities.
- Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects with competing demands.
Assets:
- Post-secondary diploma or degree from a recognized college or university, preferably in education, Museum Studies or History considered an asset.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification will be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of local Arnprior and area heritage and culture will be considered an asset.
