Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads and Services, this Maintenance Technician is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Town’s fleet of vehicles and equipment as well as assisting with maintenance of infrastructure through the performance of a variety of labour-type jobs.
The primary responsibilities for this position include (but not limited to) the following:
- Receive daily circle checks and repair requests from the Roads and Services Branch staff, and check for completeness. Schedule units to be repaired.
- Follow established preventative maintenance, priority schedules, and arrange for emergency repairs. Where required, make recommendations for contracting out of certain repairs.
- Inspect vehicles and equipment and identify potential safety or maintenance issues. Troubleshoot and resolve repair and maintenance issues with the Supervisor, Roads and Services.
- Work out a preventative maintenance plan where required.
- Report any indications of possible equipment failures/deficiencies, vehicles that become unroadworthy, or equipment abuse to the Supervisor, Roads and Services.
- Acquire necessary parts from stockroom and arrange for parts orders and delivery.
- When required, consult with various dealers’ service, parts and sales representatives.
- Perform the work needed to accomplish all vehicle and equipment maintenance, repairs, and follow-up inspections in a safe, economical and productive manner.
- Perform all work in conjunction with Ministry of Transportation guidelines. Complete mechanical fitness and vehicle inspections, as per Ministry guidelines.
- Report all work and parts on written or electronic work orders.
- Complete and maintain current maintenance reports/schedules and safety inspection schedules on all units.
- Provide guidance, assistance and advice to the Operators in the execution of service, preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Maintenance and repairs of linear assets (roads, sidewalks, watermains, sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure).
- Municipal cemeteries (ground maintenance, opening and closing of graves).
- Properly operate equipment and other tools relevant to department, including operating winter maintenance equipment for snow plowing, sanding, salting, and snow removal, including single and tandem axle dump truck, loaders, trackless sidewalk plows, etc.
- Fabrication/welding repairs of equipment or devices as required.
- General maintenance/repairs of a mechanical nature to vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain small power tool inventory in the Public Works garage.
- Assist in addressing public inquiries, concerns, requests and complaints, as required.
The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following qualifications:
- Grade 12 minimum education.
- Truck and Coach Technician 310T License considered an asset.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a “DZ” Ontario Driver’s License within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the employer.
- Ability to obtain and maintain MECP Operator Class I in Municipal Residential Water Distribution Subsystem within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the employer. Ability to obtain and maintain MECP Operator Class II Certificate in Wastewater Collection Facility within a reasonable amount of time as determined by the employer.
- Ability to respond within 30 minutes to a call out when on standby.
- Applied knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems considered an asset.
- Inherent knowledge and experience of welding/fabrication.
- Must be mechanically inclined with experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery, including backhoe, loader, dump truck, etc. (2 years previous experience)
- Knowledge of practices and methods applicable to civil construction and construction materials and their use. Knowledgeable of the hazards and health & safety requirements of the job, including thorough knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and other relevant regulatory and legislative acts related to water and wastewater operations and maintenance.
