Reporting to the Supervisor, Roads and Services, the Labourer position assists in maintaining the Town’s infrastructure.
The primary responsibilities for this position include (but not limited to) the following:
- Storm water and drainage facilities (storm sewers, storm water management ponds, culverts, ditches, etc.).
- Municipal cemeteries (ground maintenance, opening and closing of graves).
- Signage (street names, traffic).
- Operate small equipment and other tools.
- Operate and maintain equipment and machinery (articulating municipal tractor, loader, backhoe, tractor, dump/sand/plow trucks, etc.).
- Operate winter maintenance equipment for road and sidewalk snow plowing, sanding, salting, and snow removal.
- Roadway (road surface, sidewalks, boulevards, curbs, lighting).
- Manual labour
- Data entry, record keeping and complete reports as necessary.
- Work in conjunction with various departments and ministries.
- Assist in addressing public inquiries, concerns, requests and complaints, as required.
- Protect the health and health of themselves and others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attend all relevant training/seminars regarding occupational health and safety.
- Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The successful candidate will have as a minimum the following qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent post secondary education.
- Experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and machinery (minimum one year).
- Possess and maintain a class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with a “Z” endorsement.
- Knowledge of practices and methods applicable to civil construction and construction materials and their use.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety requirements of the job.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, and WHMIS.
- Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment including articulating municipal tractor, backhoe, loader, dump truck, etc.
- Must be physically fit and capable of performing heavy physical labour at various job locations.
- Ability to respond within 30 minutes to a call out when on standby
- Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to follow specific instructions.
- Willingness to participate in the continuous development of skills and knowledge related to the industry and successfully complete all training associated with the position on an ongoing basis.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with co-workers and the public.
- Ability to work extended hours as required.
