Change in chemicals used in the town’s water treatment process, effective May 2006

CHLORAMINATED WATER COMING TO A TAP NEAR YOU

FAQ's about chloramines and why the Town is making this change.

The Town of Arnprior is implementing a new way of purifying drinking water which will benefit all residents.  Starting in May, 2006 the Town will be adopting a new process as part of its on-going commitment to improve drinking water quality.

Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and a small amount of ammonia and are an effective and long-lasting purifying agent.  Chloraminated water is fresh tasting, clean smelling and is safe for drinking, cooking and bathing.  While chlorine works more quickly, it does not last as long in the distribution system as chloramines which has been found to be a more stable and persistent disinfectant.

The Town provides water to approximately 7,500 residents from its water purification plant located on the Madawaska River and our water distribution system includes 55 kilometres of watermains.  Chloramines are used for water treatment by many municipalities including the City of Ottawa .  Kidney dialysis patients and fish owners must take special care with chloraminated water.  Please refer to the sections titled Medical Information and Information for Fish Owners.
